Abstract:
NCDs seems to be highly prevalent among adult populations in the state as there are personal observations and increased reports through written permissions, absences and other negative consequences from the population resulting to morbidity, disability and mortality. The study was carried out to determine the prevalence of self - reported non - communicable diseases, risk factors and preventive measures among secondary school teachers in Enugu State. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. Instrument for data collection was the researcher designed questionnaire called PSNRPMQ. Population for the study was nine thousand, two hundred and fifty- six (9,256). Sample for the study consisted of 672. The data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, chi - square statistic and logistic regression models. Validity of the instrument was established by seven experts while the reliability of the instrument was estimated using Kuder - Richardson’s formula 20 (K - R 20). The findings were as follows: Majority of the teachers were females, aged between 41 and 59 years, lived in urban areas, and earned income between #51,000 and #100,000.00. Majority of the teachers reported high prevalence of NCDs and associated risk factors for NCDs. There was association between age and signs and symptoms of cancers, diabetes and hypertension; gender and signs and symptoms of CVDs, cancers, diabetes and hypertension; Location and signs and symptoms of CVDs, cancers and hypertension; and level of income and signs and symptoms of cancers and hypertension. Similarly, association existed between gender and level of income and associated risk factors for NCDs. Majority of the teachers indicated that all the suggested preventive measures were preventive measures for NCDs. Gender and location were significant determinants for CVDs; gender, location and level of income were significant determinants for cancers; age, gender, location and level of income were significant determinants for diabetes and hypertension; while gender and level of income were significant determinants of associated risk factors for NCDs.
