Abstract:
The general objective of this study is to investigate Sexuality and HIV/AIDs Education Intervention Measures in Uzo-uwani Local Government Area, Post-primary Schools of Enugu State. A cross-sectional survey research was conducted to generate data to answer the research questions as well as test the hypotheses. In this context, 610 students aged 08-20 years were selected as respondents from secondary schools in Uzo-uwani L.G.A. This study used two methods namely quantitative and qualitative as the best way to address the issues of the study. In the quantitative method data were collected through questionnaire, while in the qualitative method data were collected through in-depth interviews. Data collected through questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive techniques such as frequency, percentages and Chi square test to summarize the data collected, while the data obtained through in-depth interviews were first of all coded according to themes and then content analyzed. The study reveal, among others, that secondary school students are aware of sexuality education. Findings also reveal that majority of the respondents (98.4%) indicated that they have participated on sexuality and HIV/AIDS education. The findings revealed that sexuality and HIV/AIDs education was taught twice a week in Uzo-uwani secondary schools but the time allocated to it was not enough. The Chi square test shows that there was statistically significant relationship between students and acceptance of sexuality education, sex and HIV/AIDS education intervention measures and teachers positive attitude towards sexuality education and acceptance and participation in sexuality and HIV/AIDS intervention measures. It was recommended that secondary school teachers who play pivotal role in the teaching of sex education should be exposed to special training, workshops, seminars and conferences on sex education. This will promote their competence in sexuality education and in turn enhance students’ involvement and catalyze sex education.
