Abstract:
This paper discusses the importance of reading for national unity and cultural integration, with a focus on the Nigerian youth. This is against the backdrop that the quest for unity and cultural integration is much desired between the various ethnic nationalities that make up the nation. The absence of national unity and cultural integration makes it difficult for citizens to have a common sense of identity. The paper considers the concepts of youth, reading, national unity and cultural integration. The role of the youth in national unity and cultural integration were also highlighted. The paper goes on to consider the place of reading in national unity and cultural integration, noting the status of reading culture among the Nigerian youth. Strategies that can help in advancing or improving the reading culture among the Nigerian youth were discussed.
