Abstract:
The study sought todetermine the extent at which work over load affects psychological commitment, ascertain the nature of the relationship between role conflict and interpersonal relation, determine the effect of lack of participative management on manpower development,establish the extent of the relationship between denial of fringe benefits and employee ,acquisition and retention, andascertain the extent at which poor organisational structure affect interdepartmental relation of the selected manufacturing firms in Southeast Nigeria.The study had a population size of 8344, out of which a sample size of 553 was realized using Freund and William’s formula at 5% error tolerance and 95% level of confidence. Instrument used for data collection was primarily questionnaire and interview. Out of 553 copies of the questionnaire that were distributed, 505 copies were returned while 48 were not returned. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The hypotheses were tested using Pearson product moment correlation coefficient and simple linear regression statistical tools. The findings indicate that work overload has significant negative effect on psychological commitment (r = 0.817; t = 31.814; F= 1012.149; p < 0.05). There is a negative relationship between role conflict and interpersonal relation (r =.798; P<.05). Lack of participative management has negatively affect manpower development (r = 0.768; t = 26.915; F = 724.409; p< 0.05). There is a negative relationship between denial of fringe benefits and employee acquisition and retention (r =.784; P<.05). Poor organizational structure negatively influence interdepartmental relation (r = 0.761; t = 26.282; F= 690.748; p < 0.05). The study concluded that in today, workplace stress is becoming a major issue of increasing concern to employees and organizations. The study recommended that Organizations in Nigeria should o employ the services of Organizational and Clinical Psychologists to help in providing stress coping skills, coaching and counseling to employees as it will help to boost efficiency and high productivity in various organization in Nigeria.
