Abstract:
Security appraisal is very essential as it brings to lime light the state of a power system in the event of contingency. In this work, a single line contingency analysis was carried out on 132/33kV, 13-Bus power network using MATPOWER5.0 embedded in MATLAB to carry out fast decoupled load flow studies in order to determine the voltage violation at various buses and to calculate the performance indices. The simulation result shows that bus number 4, 6, 12, and buses 13 have voltage violations and transmission line connecting buses 1 to 2, 1 to 8, 1 to 11, and 8 to 9 have high severity index. The performance indices were further ranked in accordance with their severity and priority in order to draw the attention of the system operators of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company for distribution planning and expansion. We further recommend the construction of double circuit lines at the affected lines and optimal placement of FACTS devices at the distribution lines to decongest the overloaded lines and improve the voltage profile in the network.
